Nail art isn’t easy to create and one needs years of practice as well as an eternal love for nail art and manicures to master it. However, there are some creative people who are just blessed with a great amount of talent for nail art and have gone as far as making it a profession. One such woman is New York-based nail artist Gina Edwards. The manicurist is one of those professionals who are responsible for creating some of the fashion-forward nail trends seen on fall 2015 runways. Yes, Gina Edwards sets trends and inspires nail fanatics everywhere with her creations and has managed to turn her positive attitude and immaculate performance into a remarkably rewarding career. The nail art expert also performs nail magic on celebrity clients and has worked with names like Lady Gaga, Katie Holmes, Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner. She also has commercial clients like Vogue and L.A.M.B and is currently working with brands such as Kiss Products Inc to create new nail products. Here is an up close and personal interview with the celebrity manicurist...

You! How did you get interested in this profession?

Gina Edwards: Once, I started manicuring my own nails on a regular basis I felt wonderful. I wanted to pass that feeling onto others. I went to nail school and the rest is a flash of light.

You!  What are the upcoming trends in nails?

G.E: Upcoming nail trends for manicures are textured, matte and negative space.

You! What makes the nails of celebs different from a girl next door’s attempt at beautiful nails?

G.E: The celebrities go to professional nail artists who create beautiful nails for them, whereas an average girl has to do it all herself. Having the right tools, practice and skill separates the girl next door from a seasonal nail artist.

You! How do you decide to style a celeb’s nail? Does the celeb or the PR rep take the lead in this or is it all your decision?

G.E: The process in creating a nail look can go either way. The stylist has a lot of input but in the end, the client can and will change their mind on the day of an event or at the time of their manicure. A recent situation took place where the stylist and I collaborated on a nail look and I made samples. I came prepared with pre designed KISS full cover nails and once I arrived at the hotel suite, the celebrity changed her mind and we down scaled the design.

You! What makes a MetGala manicure and nail art different than a MMVA manicure?

G.E:  The MetGala marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit and usually has a theme. You create the wardrobe, hair, makeup and nails around it. Much Music Video Awards (MMVA) is more of a free flowing less restrictive platform that allows the celebrity and their glam team to come up with a look.

You! Do press on nails damage the original nails?

G.E: Press ons do not damage your nails when removed properly. In fact, imPRESS press on manicure is the best way to protect your nails from harsh chemicals or if you have just removed your acrylics or gels.

You! Nail care tips and tricks?

G.E: My absolute favourite quick tip for having beautiful hands and nails is applying almond or calendula oil.Nailed it!

You! How should our readers plan their nail looks this season?

G.E: Planning your nail look this season is pretty simple. Work with outfits during the week to compliment your manicure. Try a mid-week mani switch by replacing your polished manicure with a set of ‘imPRESS’ press on manicure which comes in a variety of cool colours for all seasons.

You! How did you rise so far in this competitive field?

G.E: My work ethic is extreme. I view every job as an opportunity for meeting new people and starting new partnerships.

You! Your tips for career advancement in this field?

G.E: In my opinion career advancement can be achieved through patience, professionalism and networking with others in the industry.
