Pink Ribbon symbolises support for Breast Cancer Awareness worldwide. It is an emblem of hope for breast cancer patients and a symbol of celebration for survivors. Pink Ribbon Pakistan was established in 2004, by Mr Omer Aftab, a social activist.
Pakistan has the highest rate of breast cancer in Asia. In Pakistan, over 10 million women are at risk of Breast Cancer. In other words, one in nine women in Pakistan is at risk of developing breast cancer. Every year, approximately 90,000 cases are diagnosed and over 40,000 women die of breast cancer. Low level of female literacy, cultural beliefs, taboos and myths and misconceptions hinder early diagnosis and treatment. With early detection, the chance of curing breast cancer is over 90 per cent. This is the message we need to spread.
Pink Ribbon Pakistan focuses on spreading awareness about the importance and method of monthly breast self-examination for early detection of Breast Cancer.
The ‘Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Hospital’ is Pakistan’s first dedicated breast cancer facility, located in Lahore. The construction of the hospital is 95 per cent complete. The final phase will be completed in a few months, making the hospital fully operational.
Currently, the hospital offers free services including doctor consultations, breast clinical examinations, 3D mammography, shear-wave doppler ultrasound screening, and most importantly, BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene testing, providing essential care to families.
When fully functional, the hospital will serve 40,000 deserving patients annually and offer all services from diagnostic to treatment - free of cost, and under one roof.
Recently, ‘Friends of Pink Ribbon Karachi Chapter’ organised a fundraiser in aid of the Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Hospital at Avari Towers. A number of socialists and prominent personalities including bankers, executives, and entrepreneurs attended this prestigious event and donated generously for the noble cause. Most women were dressed in pink attires in sync with the theme of the event - giving positive vibes to the whole ambiance.
After introductory speeches and a scrumptious dinner, the honourable guests were delighted by a musical evening, aptly called ‘Ek Suhaani Shaam’ where new but talented singers sung some hit evergreen songs, selected from old Pakistani movies. The audience really enjoyed the original filming of the songs being shown on the projector side by side. All in all, it was a melodious evening in the true sense of the word.
The entire proceeds of the evening will go towards the completion of the Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Hospital in Lahore.
