Sheena Shamoon: My first exposure to science was spurred by a life-changing event that occurred in my biology lesson. I first learned about the complex workings of the human body when I was 14 years old, and I was immediately fascinated. I was captivated by the elegance and complexity of biological systems, which sparked a passion that would guide my academic and professional endeavours.
You! What drove you to choose a career in medicine specifically?
SS: My desire to have a meaningful effect on people’s lives motivated me to pursue a career in medicine. As I learned more about the complexity of biology, I became more conscious of medical practitioners’ huge impact on both individuals and communities. My ambition to become a doctor was motivated by the opportunity to alleviate suffering, promote wellness, and enhance societal welfare.
You! Can you share any specific experiences or moments that solidified your decision to pursue a career in medicine?
SS: One key experience that confirmed my desire to study medicine was when a close family was seriously injured in an accident. Witnessing my loved one’s deep relief and comfort from medical care demonstrated the transformational power of healthcare. It was then that I discovered the noble and humble aspect of the medical profession, which inspired me to devote my life to assisting others via medicine.
