interview
She is glamorous, she is bold, she is camera friendly, she is none other than the ubiquitous queen of ramp - Fouzia Aman who stands tall as super model in our indigenous fashion fraternity. Fouzia has modelled for almost all renowned fashion designers and brands over the years including HSY, Sana Safinaz, and Khaadi etc. She is a favourite among fashion photographers who adore her due to her professional attitude and mannerism. “I tend to always give my best with whatever it is that I’m doing. Be it photo shoots, or ramp walk, or a commercial,” expresses Fouzia.
Talking about her early modelling days, Fouzia says, “I have been passionate about modelling since my childhood. One day, my makeup artist friend, Erum, noticed my interest in it and recommended me to fashion photographer Rizwan ul Haq. Thanks to her recommendation, I was able to start my modelling career. My first ever shoot was for the cover of Diva magazine’s Nike issue.”
Being a fashionista Fouzia’s favourite brands are Dior, Hermes and Chanel. “When it comes to my favourite designers, I love wearing Eman Body Focus, Maheen Khan and Shehla Chatoor and my favourite international designers are Issey Miyake, Alexander Mc Queen, Maison Margiela and Versace,” elucidates Fouzia. So, what’s the latest addition in your luxury items? “A Bottega bag,” shares the fashion savvy girl. “However, in my daily life, I prefer comfortable and casual attire such as denim jeans, t-shirts, and, of course, kameez shalwar, which I find to be the most comfortable of all options,” she comments.
When asked what’s the secret of her fitness, she smiles and replies, “I maintain my health and fitness through positive thinking, staying happy, and having zero expectations from anyone. Yoga and staying hydrated with lots of water are also essential parts of my routine. However, I am a foodie too, I enjoy exploring various cuisines.”
Recently, Fouzia has tried her luck into acting. Interestingly, her debut film ‘Jamun ka Darakht’ won for ‘Best Social Justice Short Film’ at the prestigious World Film Festival, held in Cannes in February 2024. According to Fouzia, her transition from modelling to acting is a thrilling new chapter for her. “Having worked on numerous ad campaigns, transitioning to acting wasn’t a challenge for me.
I am eagerly embracing this journey, setting high expectations for myself,” elucidates Fouzia. Describing her role in the film she explains, “I was persuaded by Faisal Kapadia (producer) and Rafay Rashdi, (director) to work in their film - ‘Jamun ka Darakht’. I said yes after reading the script. This role was close to my heart. The role felt real as I could relate to it. It explores the journey of a supermodel and delves into the realities of the fashion industry, portraying the character with depth and authenticity. Unlike the typical role, my character in the film is bold and assertive. I enjoyed playing a powerful character as I am an advocate of women empowerment.”
“The film, now titled ‘The Java Plum Tree’, is being dubbed in French to reach a broader audience. I am thrilled about the prospect of working on more films in future – subject to the quality of scripts and the roles offered to me. However, my dream project would be playing a politician role,” states Fouzia.
I don’t remember the exact age when I started doing makeup, but I recall using lipstick as my only makeup during Eid celebrations in my younger days.
