Carpet: a synonym for warmth and comfort

Your home’s interior is one of the best ways to express your personality and aesthetic sense. When it comes to designing your rooms, carpets create a fabulous home. They can be used under coffee tables and dining tables which creates balance and harmony with the rest of the room setting.

In terms of flooring options, a carpet can not only add a sense of cosiness, warmth, and invitingness to a space through its tactile texture, but it can also give you the chance to express your own creativity in terms of colour and material. When placed properly, a carpet helps to anchor the decor and furniture in a living space. Carpet also provides a comfortable place to sit, play, or work and gives a room an overall warmer feeling.

Whether you opt for a carpet that stands out as a focal feature or a subtle design that seamlessly ties together the room’s elements, the right choice can make a world of difference in your interior design. By choosing the right carpet, one can introduce colours, patterns, and textures that harmonise with the room’s existing decor or provide a contrasting element that brings a spark of interest. It instantly transforms a space, softening the look of a room and absorbing noise to create a cosy environment. Moreover, during the colder months, carpets contribute to maintaining the room’s warmth and cosiness.

An incredibly beneficial aspect of carpet flooring is its sound insulation properties. Carpets have the ability to absorb sound, significantly reducing echo and noise levels within the room. This feature makes carpet flooring an excellent choice for rooms where peace and tranquillity are desired, such as bedrooms, study rooms, or home offices.

Types of carpet:

Woven: Woven carpet is made using a labour-intensive method whereby colours and decoration are woven in rather than printed onto the surface. A high-end product, it is usually made from 80 to 100 per cent wool, and it comes in two forms: Axminster, often patterned with a velvet finish, and Wilton, which can be plain or textured.

Tufted: Tufted carpet is the most popular type, with a more varied choice of styles. It is made by punching the pile yarn into a backing fabric using needles, which produces cut and loop pile designs.

Cut-pile: There are lots of variations of cut-pile carpets. These are sheared, revealing the fibre which makes them softer and a popular choice all over the home where comfort is key.

Loop-pile: The more practical carpet type as it is durable and often more stain resistant. The fibres are twisted into small loops, giving them a low profile.

Tips to choose carpet...

When choosing a carpet, you must consider many factors - material, style, pattern, and quality. Additionally, the colour of your carpet should contribute to the theme and atmosphere of the room.

*You may choose a neutral carpet to maintain focus on the other visual elements in the room. Alternatively, you may select a bold carpet that itself becomes a focal point of the room. The always-popular beige carpet makes a room look open and spacious. For a bolder statement, match your carpet to a common colour in your furniture and draperies. In place of plain white carpets, go for neutral tones that look elegant and add a pinch of glam to your room.

* Darker colours help make a room appear cosier. Lighter colours make a room appear larger. A popular option is to choose a carpet that combines two colours in a subtle, neutral blend. You can opt for light-coloured rugs to help illuminate and enliven a space.

*The colour of your carpet will look different under different lighting conditions. Make sure to bring carpet samples home to look at them under your home’s unique lighting conditions.

*A room with natural light will feel open and airy when paired with lighter colours. Artificial lights give off various colours, so the carpet should match them. Try warm colours for incandescent lighting or cooler colours for fluorescent lighting. For dimly lit rooms, brighter colours can lighten up the space.
