This week You! is in conversation with the gorgeous Hira Mani, about her acting preferences and future plans…

With ‘Teri Meri Kahaniyan’, you are now a film star. How was the experience?

We started it as a short film for YouTube but later, it turned into a feature film. Honestly, I’ve never exerted myself excessively to become a movie star. My main focus has been on raising my children and ensuring they receive a quality education. Acting, for me, has been more of a professional commitment rather than a passionate pursuit. This film came to me unexpectedly. So, I am happy and consider it a milestone in my career. Doing my first film with an ace director is amazing.

How important is doing a film for you?

To me, the platform of film is larger than life and has its importance, whether it is an art movie, or commercial cinema. I see it with this point of view.

So, when are we going to see you as a traditional filmy heroine?

I don’t know about the future, but, I am content with how things are going at the moment. I have no extreme desire to do something particular in films. I have done a lot of different roles in my dramas. Moreover, I am a full-time filmy person in my real life (laughs).

You did your first drama with Mani and now your debut film is with him, as well. Was it planned or just coincidence?

I was lucky to have both my television drama and film debut alongside my husband, Mani. Collaborating with him feels like a privilege, given his prior film recognition. He holds seniority over me in all areas - TV dramas, hosting, and films.

Would you be interested in performing dance sequences in movies?

The film didn’t require any dance routines. Interestingly, there’s no specific requirement for dancing nowadays. Even in dramas, actors are incorporating dance scenes. However, things like wearing saris, performing dances, and acting like a ‘heroine’, I frequently share all of this on my Instagram. Therefore, I believe that I have enough diverse platforms where I can express myself.

Which character did you enjoy playing most, till date?

I enjoy most of my roles. My roles in dramas like ‘Kashf’ and ‘Ibn-e-Hawa’ present characters that could be considered typical girl-next-door personas. I enjoyed portraying them, especially since they contrast with my personality. I have a fondness for depicting roles of traditional Pakistani girls. If one were to look at my body of work, they would find that I often gravitate towards roles that explore Sufism and possess profound meanings. Both my projects, ‘Kashf’ and ‘Ibn-e-Hawa’, received critical acclaim.

Most of your television roles are very serious and meaningful but your film is a comedy. How did that happen?

I actually started television with comedy roles. Unexpectedly, a shift occurred towards more mature characters. However, I believe that an actor should be versatile enough to tackle any role.

Do you think that the stereotypical roles of women in our dramas need to be changed?

I think I am not in the position to decide or change this pattern. But yes, if I can change something different with my acting, I would definitely do it. I even alter many things in my script which I feel are inappropriate to go on air, like some language or act. But ultimately, the overall content is in the hands of production houses.

Tell us about your next project.

My next drama is going to be on Geo TV soon. It is written by Mohsin Mirza and revolves around women empowerment.

Do you think being popular on social media brings a sense of achievement or responsibility?

Definitely, you enjoy your fame. Those who follow you on social media must like something about you. And these followers are mostly loyal. However, there are also individuals who express criticism, and I find this to be acceptable. I feel trying to gather only love from everyone is boring. It is natural that there are always those who might dislike you. If everybody loves you, then there is something you’re not doing right.
