Hey Ed,

‘Effective speaking’ by Ramsha Maryam, in the issue of January 28, was helpful. Ed, I have confidence problem while speaking English although my written English is quite good. The thing is that everybody at home speaks Urdu only. I tried to practice speaking with friends but they often burst out laughing because of my pronunciation and it became so embarrassing that I just quit trying. I think there should be an article about ways to speak with good accent and pronunciation.

Hey Asim, English is not our first or national language, so making fun of anyone’s pronunciation or accent is a very shameful thing to do. Some people suffer from inferiority complex and try to put others down. Don’t worry about these ‘friends’ and practice as much as you can. We will soon run a comprehensive write-up on improving speech and pronunciation.

Hi Ed,

I have read a couple of letters in criticism of Hina, the very charming protagonist of ‘The Eid engagement and other weddings’. What people fail to understand is that Hina is hurt, and she thinks she has been betrayed by Gohar and her own brother, so her reaction is justified. But she is such a sweet girl that I feel certain she will realise that Gohar at least is not at fault. As far as Ray is concerned, Hina has every right to be angry. Ray acted like a jerk and should apologise to Hina.

Hello Editor,

I am a fan of Sameen Amer and I am happy to see ‘The Green Room’ back. I also like ‘Poets’ Corner’ and ‘Comic Relief’. Entertainment stories, though, are doled out like ‘tabaruk’, and we can do with more of these. Keep up the good work, Ed, and to my fellow readers: stay safe and observe all SOPs please; Covid is still here, and probably is not going anywhere.

Bye.

Reflection

Narrated Abu Huraira (R.A):

Allah’s Apostle (S.A.W) entered the mosque and a person followed him. The man prayed and went to the Prophet and greeted him. The Prophet returned the greeting and said to him, “Go back and pray, for you have not prayed.” The man went back prayed in the same way as before, returned and greeted the Prophet who said, “Go back and pray, for you have not prayed.” This happened thrice. The man said, “By Him Who sent you with the Truth, I cannot offer the prayer in a better way than this. Please, teach me how to pray.” The Prophet said, “When you stand for Prayer say Takbir and then recite from the Holy Qur’an (of what you know by heart) and then bow till you feel at ease. Then raise your head and stand up straight, then prostrate till you feel at ease during your prostration, then sit with calmness till you feel at ease (do not hurry) and do the same in all your prayers.
