Twins- are they double trouble?

I have always fancied having an identical twin. After years of reading those frisky ‘twin mysteries’ and ‘two of a kind’, having a twin seems like the most excellent thing that could have happened to me. Just any other twin would certainly NOT be fine; they start to contradict and distinguish with the course of time. It is only identical twins who neither change nor become different, even over a long period of time; you could paint one with melted lipstick and dress the other in ludicrous circus clothes, but you would just find them the same mirror images of each other.

It seems that mystery, horror or even romance novels have a nice edge to them if the main protagonists are identical twins. There are a couple of books which are universal favourites due to the above mentioned fact. However, I find that twins should always be female if they have been intended to play the role of main characters in a series of novels. Rarely is it that the twins are male, whatever the age requirements may be. Moreover, books which have twin as main characters are usually for every age group, except for older people.

The Sweet Valley Twins

The Sweet Valley twins have always been very popular. With different age groups, the Sweet Valley twins are well-liked by children and teenagers. The twins start as little children in Sweet Valley Kids, and gradually get older in Sweet Valley Middle School, Sweet Valley Junior High, Sweet Valley High and Sweet Valley University. The series of novels is classified into multiple genres. The Sweet Valley Middle School has multiple books on mystery, fiction, horror or even matters of everyday life, like going to school and bickering with your friend. However, as the twins grow older, the genre begins to percolate more into the category of romance, and Sweet Valley University and Sweet Valley High, which are totally based on love, romance and tragedy.

The main characters of these novels are Jessica and Elizabeth, who are two very different people despite being identical twins. Jessica is more into boys, clothes, fashion, gossip and dating; on the other hand, Elizabeth is fond of books, homework and history. Jessica is a member of the Unicorn Club, which comprises the most exclusive and admired girls of Sweet Valley School. She thinks that her friends are a thousand times better than Elizabeth’s, whereas, the latter thinks that Jessica’s friends are foppish snobs with the least level of diffidence and modesty. The novels are in a series and revolve around the differing lives of Jessica and Elizabeth.

Mary Kate and Ashley

The Olsen twins are yet another set of twins. They do not have their novels classified into different age groups, but they do have different genres. Romance, horror and fiction genres are some of them, but the main genre of the series is mystery and thriller. The twins have a detective agency called the Olsen and Olsen Twins Agency which they have formed under the guidance of their detective grandmother. The twins are alike, from their strawberry blonde hair to the dimples on their cheeks. However, from the inside, they are as different as the sun and the moon. Ashley is more logical and tranquil, while Mary Kate is bubblier and tends to get excited at the smallest things. They have a dog called Clue, who helps them find their way out of tricky cases. Mary Kate and Ashley is a series of novels as well.

Double Act

Double Act is a novel written by Jacqueline Wilson and illustrated by Nick Sharatt and Sue Heap. It is just a single novel, and is suitable for children who are between the ages of 8 and 12. It has been beautifully penned by Wilson, who has shrewdly used symbolism by assigning names to each one of her characters. The twins of this novel are called Ruby and Garnet. The names of most of the female characters have been depicted in a way that the symbolism often pertains to the colour red. Rubies, garnets and roses are all red; the latter being the name of the twins’ stepmother. The novel centres on the lives of Ruby and Garnet, who have been ‘spoiled’ by their new mother. Like in all other books, the twins have conflicting characters. Ruby is a vivacious, outspoken and vigorous girl, while Garnet is ‘a shy goody-goody’, unlike her bossy sister.

Apart from these novels, you can find real twins in different fields of life:

Celeb twins

Aiman Khan and Minaal Khan: These twin sisters are in the Pakistani Showbiz industry, and are quite young. They have mostly starred in multiple dramas with the roles of young school-going girls. Their projects include dramas like Man Ke Moti and Adhoori Aurat which used to premiere on Geo T.V.

James Phelps and Oliver Phelps: They are twin actors, who are part of the Hollywood movie crew. They have performed a smashing comedy role as Fred and George Weasley in the groundbreaking film, Harry Potter.

Steve and Mark Waugh: Australia’s most famous twins in sports history!

The Bryan brothers: Robert Charles “Bob” Bryan and Michael Carl “Mike” Bryan are American professional doubles tennis players, and are the most successful duo of all time. They were born on April 29, 1978, with Mike being the elder by two minutes.

Twins facts

Elvis Presley, Justin Timberlake, Marlon Jackson and Andy Garcia all had twins, but they all died shortly after birth.

Customers were confused how a Chinese couple could run their busy restaurant for 21 hours a day without getting tired. It turned out that the restaurant was run by two sets of identical twins.

Although it may be hard to believe, Kian and Remee are twins. This is the result of a one in a million combination of their parents’ genes, who are a mixed race.

The producers of “Full House” didn’t want anyone to know twins played the role of Michelle, and so they credited them as Mary-Kate Ashley Olsen in the credits.

Identical twins are 99.99 percent identical on a DNA level. In January, 2009, $6.8 million worth of jewellery was stolen in Berlin. The single suspect left behind sweat beads, which police extracted DNA from and tracked down to two people - Hassan and Abbas - identical twins. Both denied responsibility, accused the other, and because police couldn’t identify which of the twins the DNA belonged to, both ended up walking free.
