An old reader writes…
Dear Ed,
I am an old reader of Us. During my teens and early twenties, my Friday never used to start without a fight for Us with my siblings. Then, life happened, I went abroad, got a degree, then a job, and now I am a father of a three-year-old girl. So, I missed Us all this time, and happened upon it at a friend’s house, and imagine my happiness at seeing the magazine of ‘my teenage years’ again!
However, the reunion was bittersweet; the number of pages used to be 24 then, now Us has just 16, counting the front and back cover. I am happy that the quality of the articles and stories remains the same, though. I used to love a particular segment, The Roving Eyes’, and I wish to see it again. It was disappointing not to see the editorial, as well.
I wish all the writers and poets all the best! The young lot is talented and it was a joy to so many of the stories. All the nest, Us.

Hi Editor,
So the first thing I see in the mag is The Eid engagement, and other weddings by Iqra Asad (October 2), and I wonder whether it’s Leena or Inaya who is getting engaged, then tell myself they are too young, then realise it’s another story. Guys, I was disappointed because I was hoping to meet the Moins again, but then I read it, and found it very interesting. But, whether or not it’s as good as our favourite ‘Hackschool Project’ remains to be seen. I am hoping to meet the Moin sisters at the engagement!

Hi Ed,
I want to praise ‘Living under the knife’ by Sara Jahangir in today’s Us (October 2). The write-up shows how shallow we have become and even worse, how cruel we are to others. We hurt people who are related to us effortlessly with snide and harsh observations, and we think we are good people. No one should be forced to change what Allah endowed them with. When we criticize someone on the basis of looks, it’s the maker we criticize! May God forgive us!

Narrated ‘Abdullah (R.A):
I asked the Prophet (S.A.W) “Which deed is the dearest to Allah?” He replied, “To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times.” I asked, “What is the next (in goodness)?” He replied, “To be good and dutiful to your parents” I again asked, “What is the next (in goodness)?” He replied, ‘To participate in Jihad (religious fighting) in Allah’s cause.” ‘Abdullah added, “I asked only that much and if I had asked more, the Prophet would have told me more.”
