On a cool evening of Saturday 23rd September, a bunch of young people of Karachi gathered under a roof for an instameet.
What’s instameet? An instameet is a group of local instagrammers meeting up to take photos and make videos together. That’s it! An instameet can happen anywhere and be of any size. You get an excuse to go out and explore a new place. And also, you get to meet your favourite instagrammers that you’ve been insta-stalking forever and they are all super nice! I promise.
When you come to the instameet, look out for a group of people standing around staring at their smartphones and carrying photography gear. Just make sure everyone has arrived. Meet and talk together with your fellow instagrammers. This can be the time to exchange any tips on apps, photography and anything related to Instagram.
Then, the host lets the group know the plans for the day. There are two ways to do this:
1- Local Instagrammers all disperse to catch the sunset, sunrise; or,
2- They do a photowalk from point A to point B and take photos on the way. The host may tell what hashtags to use.
It may vary from one instameet to another.
Instameet tip: If you’re that person who likes to entertain, think about bringing props or doing something awesome to get noticed on the Instagram feed.
Soha Sajid, a sixteen-year-old photographer, said, “Well, such kinds of events give us a chance to come together and learn from our fellow Instagrammers. I, for one, have learned more about cameras in the two instameets that I attended than the whole while I’ve had a camera, to be honest.”
Awais R. Toor, a visual artist and photographer, while speaking about his whole experience of instameet Karachi, said: “For the love of sharing creativity and socializing, I like to attend Instameets because it’s a great opportunity for brilliant and talented local photographers, visual artists to come together to share ideas and connect with each other, and form an inspiring creative community, too.”
To make the event a memorable one, a group photo is also shot with the organizers, featuring the panoramic view or the famous mark of that area.
Instameets traditions
1. You don’t need to be a professional photographer to go to an Instameet. If you have a smartphone, you’re set.
2. It’s not a nerd fest. Instameets are super social and friendly. You do spend a bit of time taking photos, editing, and uploading, but for the most part, it’s all about the social experience.
3. Instameets are the best to learn new things, keep up with Instagram and editing app updates, and it’s all about getting practical advice.
