EVENT
Universal Children’s Day 2024 was commemorated in Islamabad under the theme “For Every Child, Every Right”, bringing together key stakeholders, civil society organizations, and children from diverse communities. Led by the Child Rights Movement (CRM) Pakistan and supported by organizations like AwazCDS-Pakistan, United Global Organization of Development (UGOOD), Islamic Relief (IR), and the Youth Development Association (YDA), the event marked the 35th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
The celebration reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to children’s rights, with a strong focus on education, healthcare, protection, and meaningful participation. CRM Pakistan, a coalition of over 450 civil society organizations, has been advocating for children’s welfare since 2008. Active in regions across Pakistan, including AJK, GB, and former FATA, the coalition uses research and advocacy to amplify children’s voices and address their challenges.
Mr. Fiaz Bhatti extended a warm welcome to all the children and representatives from various NGOs, and expressed his appreciation on the active participation of 150 children from four schools, who brought energy and enthusiasm to the event.
The event featured workshops on education, healthcare, and child protection, encouraging children to share their recommendations on improving their lives. Their insights highlighted the urgent need for quality education, stronger child protection policies, better healthcare access, legal identity, and active involvement in decision-making.
In addition to these discussions, vibrant cultural activities, games, and face-painting fostered inclusivity and joy, while performances by students of St. Mary’s Primary Education Center captivated the audience. Songs, speeches, and tableaus underscored the importance of valuing children’s voices and creativity. A mobile van was also present, facilitating birth registrations for marginalized children and ensuring their access to essential rights.
Speaking up for children
Highlighting the challenges faced by children in Pakistan, Syed Ishtiaq Gilani, CEO of UGOOD, emphasized the urgent need for action. “Children are not just our future but also our present. Their survival, development, and participation must be safeguarded in an environment filled with love and care.”
Mr. Zia ur Rehman, CEO of AwazCDS-Pakistan, remarked: “Over 26 million children are out of school, child labor is rising, and sexual exploitation remains rampant. Pakistan must enforce a unified definition of a child under 18 and align its laws with international standards.”
Mr. Waseem, HR Head of SPARC, added: “Events like these give underprivileged children the chance to feel valued and heard. It’s a step toward creating a more inclusive and equitable society.”
A vision for change
The children’s recommendations showcased their vision for a better future. They called for:
• Inclusive and quality education.
• Stronger policies to protect against child labor and exploitation.
• Expanded healthcare services, especially in rural areas.
• Climate resilience and disaster preparedness.
• Increased digital literacy and safe online spaces.
• Accessible recreational spaces for play and creativity.
Moving forward
The active participation of 150 children, along with representatives from CRM Pakistan, UGOOD, AwazCDS, Islamic Relief, SPARC, and YDA, made the event a resounding success. Mr. Liaqat Masih, Head of Operations at YDA, expressed his gratitude: “This event is a testament to our shared commitment to supporting and protecting children. We look forward to hosting more initiatives that create a brighter future for them.”
As the celebration concluded, one message stood out: children are not just beneficiaries but active contributors to societal progress. By prioritizing their education, healthcare, and protection, Pakistan moves closer to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive.
