Dear Editor,

In today’s issue (6 September), the cover story Celebrating the Spirit of Patriotism was exactly what we needed. It's vital to remember and honor our national heroes, whose selfless sacrifices have allowed us the freedom and privileges we enjoy today. However, simply commemorating their sacrifices is not enough—we must strive to 'do more.' True patriotism lies not just in remembering the past but in actively working to shape the future. To truly honor the lives lost in the defense of our country, we must dedicate ourselves to making it stronger, more prosperous, and united.

I was also deeply moved by the ‘Poets’ Corner’ segment. The poem Tears and tide by Abid Agha was remarkable—he has a unique ability to capture profound emotions through powerful imagery. Abid Agha is indeed a talented poet, and I hope to see more of his poems in the future.

Old age home visit

Dear Ed,

My recent visit to an old age home in Karachi left an indelible mark on my heart, stirring deep empathy for elderly individuals who were once the pillars of strength for their families but are now living in isolation. The allure of social media and modern distractions has created a growing divide between children and their parents, leading to unfavorable comparisons, unnecessary demands for freedom, and heartbreaking consequences, such as parents being forced out of their homes to spend their twilight years in solitude. Alarmingly, Pakistan’s elderly population in old age homes is increasing rapidly—from 7% (14 million) in 2019, it is expected to reach 14% by 2050. This trend requires urgent attention from both policymakers and society. The government must take steps to safeguard the rights of the elderly, while we, as individuals, must reassess our values. We must remember that parents are the foundation of our lives, having guided and supported us every step of the way. It is crucial to nurture family bonds, strengthen intergenerational connections, and ensure that our parents spend their golden years surrounded by love and care, not loneliness. After all, one day, we too will be in their place.
