The mystery of D.B. Cooper remains one of the most fascinating unsolved cases in American history. On the afternoon of November 24, 1971, a man known only as “D.B. Cooper” hijacked Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305, a Boeing 727, between Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington. Cooper was described as a calm, middle-aged man, dressed in a black suit, white shirt, and black tie, who boarded the flight under the alias “Dan Cooper.”

Shortly after takeoff, Cooper handed a note to a flight attendant, stating that he had a bomb in his briefcase. He demanded $200,000 in cash, four parachutes, and a fuel truck standing by in Seattle to refuel the plane upon arrival. Once the plane landed in Seattle, Cooper released the 36 passengers in exchange for the money and parachutes, but he kept several crew members on board.

After refueling, Cooper directed the pilot to fly towards Mexico City at a low altitude and slow speed, keeping the landing gear down and the cabin unpressurized. Somewhere over the dense forests of the Pacific Northwest, around 8:00 PM, Cooper opened the rear door of the plane and parachuted into the night, disappearing into legend.

Despite a massive manhunt involving the FBI, military aircraft, and ground searches, no trace of Cooper was found. The case baffled authorities for decades. The FBI interviewed hundreds of suspects, followed countless leads, and even recovered some of the ransom money in 1980 when a boy found decaying $20 bills along the Columbia River, but the identity of D.B. Cooper and what became of him remain unknown.

Over the years, numerous theories have emerged, ranging from Cooper being a seasoned skydiver who survived the jump to him perishing in the wilderness. Some believe he may have died shortly after his daring escape. In 2016, the FBI officially closed the case, citing a lack of solid evidence to further pursue it, but the legend endures in popular culture.

D.B. Cooper’s adventure has inspired books, movies, and endless speculation. His audacious act, combined with his mysterious disappearance, has immortalized him as a folk hero of sorts—an enigmatic figure who challenged the system and vanished without a trace. The true fate of D.B. Cooper remains one of the greatest mysteries of the 20th century, and it continues to captivate the public’s imagination.
