I am depressed

Dear Guru,

I am a 24-year-old woman. After completing my Bachelor’s degree, I worked for a reputable organization. However, the toxic workplace environment there disturbed me greatly. I faced a lot of bullying, harassment, negativity, and conspiracies. My male colleagues were not very decent, and gave me a tough time. I really tried to cope with the situation but, eventually, I broke down and resigned.

I have been jobless for six months now. I want to pursue a Master’s in Business Administration, but I don’t have the funds to do so, and my parents cannot help as they are not well-off. I am feeling very depressed. Please tell me what to do.

Worried Libra

Dear Worried Libra,

I understand your predicament, but in the workplace, you often have to deal with people who are not nice to you. Most working women face problems from their male and female colleagues but learn to manage. You resigned because you were intimidated by men at your previous workplace. However, wherever you go, you might face similar problems. So, be confident, as men often harass women who do not stand up to them.

If you want to continue your studies, consider getting another job to pay for your tuition fees. You can attend business school on weekends or take a part-time job while studying. Also, look for scholarships available for bright students both at home and abroad. Research organizations, universities, and governments that offer financial aid to international students. Another option is online programs. Many reputable universities offer online MBA programs at a lower cost than traditional on-campus programs. This could be a more affordable way to get your degree.

To overcome depression, seek support. Talking to a counselor or therapist can help you manage your depression and develop coping strategies. You are a young and bright woman; you just need to be brave and confident to tackle your problems.

Good luck!

I feel homesick

Dear Guru,

I am a 27-year-old engineer. I had to get a job in Saudi Arabia because I was not making enough money in Pakistan to support my family. Now, I am financially stable but feel homesick; I miss my mother and siblings a lot. Although I am settled, I want to return to Pakistan because my mother is very sick and she needs me. However, I know that when I return, I will not be able to make as much money as I am currently making. My family depends on me because my father died five years ago, and my younger siblings are still studying. I need advice.

Homesick

Dear Homesick,

It is not easy to leave your loved ones and live alone in a foreign country, but you are doing it for your family, which is very commendable. I am sure your mother and siblings appreciate what you are doing to support them. If possible, take a temporary leave from your job to return to Pakistan and care for your mother. This way, you can return to your job in Saudi Arabia once she recovers.

Lucrative jobs are not easy to get in Pakistan, but are not impossible to find. Research well-paying job opportunities in Pakistan. Some multinational companies might offer competitive salaries. You need a long-term plan that balances your financial responsibilities with your desire to be with your family. This might include furthering your education or skills to qualify for higher-paying jobs.

Additionally, you can look for remote work opportunities that allow you to earn a good income while staying in Pakistan. Many engineering roles offer remote work options, and freelancing platforms can connect you with international clients.

If you have saved enough money, consider investing in ways that can provide a steady income for your family, such as property or a small business.

Balancing family responsibilities with career and financial stability can be challenging, but with careful planning, you can find a solution that supports both your family’s needs and your professional goals.

Good luck
