ART EXHIBITION
Let’s explore the vibrant world of British modernists with “The Penwith Portfolio” at VM Art Gallery! This stunning collection, on display until October 6, showcases the artistic prowess of 12 renowned artists who dared to challenge tradition and redefine the boundaries of art.
In 1949, the rebellious Penwith Society of Arts was born in St Ives, Cornwall, setting the stage for a revolution in the art world. Founded by abstract artists who broke away from the conservative St Ives School, this society provided a playground for creative innovation.
Fast forward to 1973, and you’ll find the birth of “The Penwith Portfolio”. This remarkable collaboration emerged under the guidance of Stanley Jones at Curwen Press in London. It was the brainchild of a grand vision—to transform a subterranean car park into a “permanent” exhibition space for the artistic giants associated with St. Ives, Cornwall.
To make this dream a reality, the society initiated fundraising efforts, one of which resulted in the creation of this stunning portfolio. Comprising 11 lithographs and 1 screenprint, these artworks are a testament to the extraordinary talents and daring spirit of the artists.
Don’t miss your chance to witness this artistic revolution firsthand at VM Art Gallery. The Penwith Portfolio is more than just an exhibition; it’s a journey through time and innovation that will leave you inspired and captivated.
