BITS ‘N’ PIECES

Narrated Abu Huraira (R.A):

Reflection

Allah’s Apostle (S.A.W) said, “While a man was walking, he felt thirsty and went down a well and drank water from it. On coming out of it, he saw a dog panting and eating mud because of excessive thirst. The man said, ‘This (dog) is suffering from the same problem as that of mine‘. So he (went down the well), filled his shoe with water, caught hold of it with his teeth and climbed up and watered the dog. Allah thanked him for his (good) deed and forgave him.” The people asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! Is there a reward for us in serving (the) animals?” He replied, “Yes, there is a reward for serving any animate [living being].”

DID YOU KNOW?

Your heart beats about 100,000 times a day

Reflection

You might never pay attention to it or even stop to think about it, but a fist-sized muscle in your chest dutifully works, day in and day out, to keep you going.

With a normal adult resting rate that is usually between 60 to 100 beats per minute, an average human heart beats about 100,000 times in a day and about 35 million times in a year. During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times!

The heart pumps blood around the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to every cell (via arteries) and taking away carbon dioxide and waste products (through veins). If you were to lay out the vast network of blood vessels – arteries, veins, capillaries – from an average adult end to end, they would stretch for over 100,000 kilometres … which means a person’s blood vessels could wrap around planet Earth around 2.5 times!

The amount of blood in a person depends on their weight, gender, and location, but a typical adult is estimated to have approximately 5 litres of the red liquid flowing through their body, making it your heart’s responsibility to pumps about 1.5 gallons of blood every minute and over 2,000 gallons over the course of a day.
