RHYME AND REASON
Assonance is the repetition of vowel or diphthong sounds in one or more words found close together.
“ Hear the loud alarum bells—
Brazen bells!/ What tale of terror, now, their turbulency tells!
In the startled ear of night
How they scream out their affright!
Too much horrified to speak,
They can only shriek, shriek,
Out of tune…”
- Edgar Allen Poe, “The Bells”
When Poe talks about alarm bells, he uses sharp, high-pitch vowels to echo their sound: notice the repetition of long “e” and “i” sounds, both of which sound a bit like screams.

I wish I could question,
The truth unspoken
And the trust broken
I wish I could question,
The promises long forgotten
And the memories way rotten
I wish I could question,
The hopes cruelly shattered
And the wishes widely splattered
I wish I could question,
The love long lost
Somewhere amidst the black frost

The whistling train is leaving the station,
Keeps on gaining momentum.
Leaving the blurry scenes behind,
People, places and shapes combined.
Your waving hands and gloomy face,
Now looks hazy in the dusk.
Suddenly I noticed on my face
Some droplets started
Rolling down silently,
And I couldn’t figure it out frankly,
Was it on saying au revoir to you?
Or on parting ways with you?
Suddenly a train passed by,
With a heavy rhythmic sound,
That pulled my memories back
To my own world.
Listening to Kenny G track in the train,
And watching panoramic views of,
Stunning snow-covered Alps,
Kept on whispering loud.
Goodbye Vienna, Goodbye Vienna

Chaotic wars often lead to nothing
but grief,
Yet the knight celebrates his triumph against the mind’s trickeries,
Frail dreams see no destination,
Only perseverance favours the fighter, indeed.
