This adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s 2012 novel A Man Called Ove finds Tom Hanks playing the role of Otto Anderson, a retired widower who has lost the will to live. But just when he is about to give up, his life is turned around by the arrival of a new family in the neighbourhood. The feisty Marisol (Mariana Treviño) – who is married to the endearingly clumsy Tommy (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) with whom she has two beautiful daughters – walks into Otto’s life and brings an unexpected friendship that just might warm Otto’s grumpy heart.
With some terrific performances by its cast (Hanks and Treviño are especially wonderful), this bittersweet dark comedy might not do anything awfully inventive or unexpected, but it certainly succeeds in touching your heart and leaves you with a reminder to love thy cranky neighbour.
