* Born on 9th December 1934 in Heworth, York, England.
* Had two brothers, Peter and Jeffery.
* Became interested in acting after her brother Jeff attended drama school.
* Made her professional acting debut in a stage production of Hamlet in 1957. Subsequently appeared in several Shakespeare plays.
* Rose to prominence after branching into film work. Has since received acclaim for performances in movies like Mrs Brown (1997), Shakespeare in Love (1998), Chocolat (2000), Iris (2001), Mrs Henderson Presents (2005), Notes on a Scandal (2006), Philomena (2013), and Belfast (2021), as well as television series including A Fine Romance (1981 – 1984) and As Time Goes By (1992 – 2005).
* Is considered one of Britain’s best actresses.
* Was married to actor Michael Williams from 1971 till his death in 2001. Their only child, daughter Finty Williams (born in 1972), is also an actress.
