women
Making my way home on Karachi’s bustling streets after another demanding workday, I’m struck by a sight that stirs something deep within me - a woman, undeterred by the chaos around her, confidently manoeuvring her bike through the gridlock traffic. Her determination is obvious, resiliently cutting through the city’s hectic energy. In her, I see the embodiment of Karachi’s women - resilient, strong, and relentless in their pursuit of a better world for themselves and their families. She is not alone. Countless women like her travel these streets every day, each silently carrying the weight of responsibility while daring to dream of a better tomorrow. Their perseverance is proof of the enduring hope that one day, opportunities won’t discriminate based on gender, and every woman will have the tools to carve her own path to success.
What is heartening is to know that a number of food companies, such as foodpanda, facilitate their women employees by giving them conducive working conditions. In this regard You! has talked to a few chefs and riders. Read on…
Starting off her journey as a rider with foodpanda in Karachi’s Malir zone in June 2022, Sana Urooj stands as a shining example of resilience and determination.
Despite the challenges of parenthood and the city’s economic hardships, she has completed over 2400 orders, capturing the hearts of customers and garnering popularity on social media platforms. Her path to success, however, was far from easy. Riding a motorcycle amidst the chaotic traffic of Karachi, while facing gender-specific challenges, Sana’s journey was filled with obstacles. Yet, she persevered, refusing to let fear hold her back.
Sana’s resilience extends beyond her delivery routes. Her journey not only inspires others to break barriers but also underscores the importance of support and mentorship in fostering female empowerment. “I find riding a bike relatively easy compared to managing orders. As a result, I’ve been invited as the chief guest by organisations focused on female riders, where I actively advocate for more women to enter this field. I have successfully taught numerous women how to ride and encouraged them to purchase bikes. The support and prayers I receive from these women fill me with immense gratitude and humility,” she shares. As Sana continues to advocate for gender equality within the delivery ecosystem, her journey reminds us that no obstacle is insurmountable when driven by purpose and perseverance.
In 2020, Farzana Khalid embarked on a journey that would redefine her career and empower countless women along the way.
As the founder of Farrah’s kitchen, a home-based venture, Farzana’s culinary skills have transformed the lives of many, offering delicious meals with a side of empowerment. However, her path to success was not without its challenges.
“My decision to become a home chef on foodpanda was born out of a desire to share my culinary expertise with a wider audience. What started as a modest venture soon grew into a thriving business,” elucidates Farzana.
With an all-female team by her side, Farzana found strength in unity, creating a supportive and empowering environment where women could thrive. “This setup not only empowers us but also fosters a sense of security and inclusion among the women we employ. They find solace in working within a supportive and safe environment, contributing to their sense of fulfillment and professional growth.” As she continues to empower her team and uplift her community, Farzana’s story serves as an example for a more inclusive and equitable future.
In the lively world of fast-food chains, Mahnoor I Allawala stands out as a trailblazing entrepreneur, leading by example with her innovative venture, Big Bash.
Offering a delicious array of favourites under one roof, from pizzas to burgers and loaded fries, calzones, and wraps, Big Bash has captured the hearts and taste buds of customers across Karachi.
Talking about the challenges she faces as a female restaurant owner, Allawala elaborates, “I faced numerous challenges in managing operations and navigating the intricacies of the industry. From handling staff and working odd hours to grappling with administrative hurdles such as licensing and permissions, my road to success has been anything but easy.”
Since its inception, Big Bash has been a proud partner of foodpanda, leveraging the platform to expand its customer base and enhance its brand value. During the challenging times of Covid-19, the company emerged as an important ally for Big Bash, playing a fundamental role in boosting sales and reaching greater heights than ever.
In the realm of logistics and operations, Zehra Khan stands as a template of empowerment and leadership. In her role with the company as Lead-Rider Engagement, her mission is to ensure the satisfaction and engagement of riders. Zehra joined foodpanda as an Associate Rider Services, where she embraced the unique opportunity to work closely with a diverse fleet of riders, combining academic learning with real-world corporate experience.
“The organisation has played a crucial role in my career growth and development by providing a supportive environment that encourages diversity and inclusion.
This support has empowered me to travel to different cities, engage with diverse groups of riders in various settings, and ultimately, make meaningful contributions to our operations,” explains Zehra.
“I have seen remarkable growth, with the fleet expanding tenfold under our teams’ stewardship. The role has accelerated my learning and enriched my experience, particularly working for Pakistan’s largest rider fleet,” she adds.
As a woman in a role traditionally dominated by men within logistics and operations, she has encountered unique challenges. “However, I’ve never once felt that this role wasn’t fit for me. On the contrary, the experience has been incredibly rewarding. The level of respect I have garnered from our riders is something I value deeply. The support from my company has significantly boosted my confidence - whether it is meeting riders at dhabas, cricket grounds, focus groups, restaurants, or attending official dinners,” expresses Zehra.
Central to our company’s spirit is a commitment to gender inclusivity and empowerment. Through initiatives such as the Lean-In Circle, conveyance allowances, day-care facilities, gym access, and common rooms, the company has created an environment where women’s voices are heard and valued. One particularly impactful project that I recall is the progression of two team members who transitioned from rider roles to positions within company’s corporate office,” Zehra elaborates.
As we commemorate International Women’s Day, it is evident that the strides made by these women have transformed the way women are contributing to the economy. As we continue to advocate for women’s rights and opportunities, let us take inspiration from these stories and strive to create environments where all individuals, regardless of gender, can thrive and contribute to a more equitable and prosperous society.
