It’s not new for famous celebrities to collaborate with fashion houses for charity purposes. Last year saw Pippa Middleton collaborate with fashion designer Tabitha Webb to create an exclusive dress and a matching scarf in order to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. This year it’s our very own Malala Yousufzai who is in the limelight for 2016’s first designer collaboration. To be more specific, it is her foundation that has partnered with socially-responsible fashion label TOMS, in order to collect funds from the profits, to support at least 12 years of education for girls across the world.
According to Vogue, TOMS has created limited edition scarf, of a traditional Islamic print, to benefit the Malala Fund. The peachish-pink scarf is emblazoned with the phrase: “One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world” around all four corners and will be available on the TOMS website for $48.
“All of us at TOMS are honoured to be able to partner with the Malala Fund and help provide education to girls around the world,” TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie told PeopleStyle while speaking of the collaboration. Malala, too, is all excited for this new venture.
“It’s a scarf girls and women can wear all over the world from the U.S. to Pakistan, whether as a fashion accessory or a beautiful headscarf or hijab,” she said. “Any girl or woman can wear it, however she wishes, to show her support for girls’ education globally. But most importantly, TOMS is giving 100 percent of the profits from every scarf to the Malala Fund to empower girls through education and I am so grateful for that.”
Celebrities including Anna Faris, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Octavia Spencer have been spotted donning the scarf in order to extend their support to the cause.
As a brand, TOMS is known for their charitable efforts. For each pair of their plimsolls sold, the company gives a pair to a child in need of footwear through its One for One programme. The reason why it picked Malala Fund for its latest initiative was because, “it amplifies girls’ voices, invests in local leaders and programs, and advocates for resources and policy changes,” the label said in a press statement.
