Saif Samejo shot to fame with his band, The Sketches but its his folk-fueled show, Lahooti Live Sessions, that is his greatest achievement. The show has come a long way in its two seasons, serving as a platform for the growth and production of indigenous folk music. And it is now all set to head off to India.
According to Saif’s recent Twitter post, Lahooti Live Sessions will soon start airing on Pepsi MTV Indies, a music channel on Indian television meant specifically for indie music.
The show’s first episode will air on Monday, 18th January at 7pm. “Folk music is not alive and well and that means it needs your attention. Presenting Lahooti Live Sessions, the brainchild of Saif Samejo, who is resurrecting these amazingly talented local artists and giving them the platform they deserve. Now all we need is your love and support. Catch the first episode live on 18th January,” said the post by Pepsi MTV Indies.
A project that started off on the roof top of Samejo’s house in Jamshoro in June 2013 quickly became a popular venue for folk artists to create music and release it online. In fact, Mai Dhai, who is now a star in her own right post her stint on Coke Studio, first appeared on Lahooti Live Sessions. A lot has been written about this musical initiative but it’s interesting to see that an Indian channel has realized its potential as a TV show instead of a local one.
