Just when one thought that Pakistani cinema had come out from the rut that was Lollywood and was broadening its horizons with experimental films, we were introduced to the official trailer of Hijrat.

Farooq Mengal’s directorial venture that has been long in the making finally unveiled its official trailer over the weekend and it feels like we have been hit by the ghost of Christmas past – one that dates back to ’90s Lollywood. The film, though pitched as love story based in Afghan refugee camps, doesn’t come across as a somber, intellectual depiction of an issue as serious as refugee crisis. Instead it seems to revolve around a love triangle between Asad Zaman, Rabia Butt and Rubab Ali, spanning across lush landscapes of Europe and the neglected refugee camps in Northern Pakistan. Veterans like Nadeem Baig and Ayub Khoso make their presence felt and so does Rabia in the almost 3-minutes long trailer that is marked by typical dialogues, awkward dialogue delivery, bomb explosions, below-average background score and a mind-numbing item song featuring Sana Fakhar.

The real test for the film will be after its release on January 21st but the trailer doesn’t leave us with high expectations.
