While all eyes were on Katrina Kaif at the 68th Cannes Film Festival, it had more to do with her locks than her outfits. The actress, whose arrival at the festival this year marked her Cannes debut, was seen with deep-red hair instead of her usual brunette shade. Since then, the dramatic makeover has made mainstream and social-media alike speculate the reasons behind such a drastic change.

Kaif recently hinted that her ruby-red tresses happened on the recommendation of Abhishek Kapoor, director of her upcoming film Fitoor, which is an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ critically acclaimed novel Great Expectations.

“At the same time, we both thought this character would be something fiery and new. We both instantly agreed on this and decided to colour the hair red,” Katrina, told IANS.

The 31-year-old actress, who has been working in Bollywood since 2003, went to London’s most renowned hair expert Daniel Galvin, who has worked on the tresses of celebrities like pop star Madonna and the late Princess Diana, for her hair-colouring.

“He was super excited about it and I was very nervous, because colouring the hair can be a little scary or damaging, especially when you have long hair. So, I did a lot of research. I thought of where to go and how to do it. In the end, it came out really nice. I am happy,” she added.

The shooting for Fitoor started earlier this year in the Indian capital of New Delhi. “We shot in
Humayun’s Tomb. It is a beautiful location. We did some amazing stuff there. We also shot on the highway and at the Imperial Hotel,” said Katrina

The film also stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Rekha and Lara Dutta in vital roles.

David Letterman bids adieu to late night television

On television since the last 33 years, David Letterman, the late-night television [phenomenon completed his final episode of Late Show with David Letterman last night. Ending after almost an hour of tributes, comedy and plethora of jokes (and surprisingly no tears at all), Letterman signed off by saying “That’s pretty much all I got ... thank you and goodnight.”

The farewell show has been slightly different than the usual overemotional television retirements such as Johnny Carson’s retirement from the same show back in 1992, or Jay Leno’s farewell last year which remained an over-emotional event. For Letterman, the retirement show remained all about reminiscing his years on the show. He included his mix of favourite segments such as the ‘Top 10 list’ with clips of his classic skits, amongst others.

Over the last few weeks, numerous celebrity guests like Julia Roberts, Ellen Degeneres, Demi Moore, Jerry Seinfeld, George Clooney, Neil Patrick Harris and more, have paid their respects to the host via social media and mainstream media. On Wednesday, he described all the tributes – in his witty and sarcastic way - as “over the top” and said he found it “flattering, embarrassing and gratifying.”

Now, as the 68 year-old has retired, rumour mills are up and running about the next heir to CBS’s Late Show series, with names like Neil Patrick Harris being thrown as the possible contender. One would have to wait until the dust around Letterman’s retirement settles to find out who actually gets to entertain the millions of fans who tune in each night. There’s no guarantee that ‘Late Nights’ will ever be the same!

‘Chittiyan Kalaiyaan’ gets a Balochi makeover?

Sabz Ali Bugti and Jagoo, famously called the Baloch boys across social media, have stunned ‘cybernauts’ once again with their soulful, folk-inspired rendition of a popular Bollywood number. It was only last year that their version of ‘Baby Doll’ went viral on both sides of the border causing frenzy amongst music fanatics who fell in love with the cover. This time around, Bugti and Jagoo try their skills at doing a Balochi take on ‘Chittiyan Kalaiyaan Ve’ – a song from Jacqueline Fernandez’ Roy that became the subject of many a meme.

Using their signature lutelike stringed musical instrument known as Sarod, the troupe manages to enthral audiences with their deep, soothing vocal prowess, despite the words not making sense to many. The video has already been viewed over 50,000 times since it was uploaded on Facebook on Thursday night and many have even appreciated it for being better than the original version.

There is, however, concern over whether Bugti and Jaago’s version is actually the original one with Bollywood’s being a rip-off for some of the music fans have revealed that the former had sung it back in 2005. Bollywood has long drawn inspiration from Pakistani music and copied songs so we won’t be surprised if it’s true. But whatever be the case, the Baloch boys stand as the perfect representation of our local, folk talent and it’s time that like others, they too are soon recognized for a spot on Coke Studio.
