Joining the universe of Muslim superheroes such as Marvel’s Kamala Khan and our very own Burka Avenger is Buraaq, aka Yusuf Abdullah, a young American Muslim living in the fictional Nova City who discovers his superpowers and resolves to use them for the good of mankind. A creation of the Split Moon Arts company in America, Buraaq was initially conceived as a comic book series and is now being fleshed out into 3D animation. The main goal of the company is to counter the negative portrayal of Muslims in Western media by showing the true face of Islam through Buraaq’s character

The main goal of the company is to counter the negative portrayal of Muslims in Western media by showing the true face of Islam through Buraaq’s character.

“Through Buraaq, we want to inspire our youth and instill pride in our Islamic heritage and values,” wrote Split Moon Arts co-founder and Buraaq director Adil Imtiaz in an email to Instep.  “Buraaq also promotes universal values that are relatable and beneficial for people all over the world.  Yusuf Abdallah has friends from different faiths and background; together, they stand up for truth and justice!”

Split Moon Arts now plan to spread their message far and wide through Buraaq on the big screen.  The Split Moon Arts founders Adil and Kamil Imtiaz roped in Shahi Hasan for the score of their two-minute promotional video, through which they hope to raise the $200,000 they need to fund the first episode of Buraaq.

Talking to Instep, Shahi Hasan said, “My involvement in the Buraaq project came about when my company Indus World Music’s U.S. office got involved in producing a promotional video for the essential funding for it. The score was produced in close collaboration with Adil Imtiaz who described Buraaq to me as a universal Muslim, like our Prophet (PBUH) – someone who would not only help Muslims but also stand for the good of all humanity.”

Imran Abbas’ ‘princely’ makeover for Jaanisaar

Imran’s debut in Bollywood may have the least to do with fashion with an icky 3D zombie-meets-amphibian creature taking all the attention away to no commercial success but it appears the actor is pulling all stops to lure his fans in his next offering. Jaanisaar, which will star Imran opposite Bollywood’s go-to stylist Pernia Qureshi, has its first look out and boy does Imran look quite the dapper gentleman in those bandhgalas and mojaris.

Imran’s wardrobe seems quite inspired by Abhishek Bachchan’s nawabi look in director Muzaffar Ali’s earlier venture Umrao Jaan and has been handpicked and designed by Muzaffar’s wife Meera Ali, keeping in mind the Mughal feel of the film. “My husband asked me to keep two things in mind: the costumes should be period-related and their authenticity should be mood-related,” says Meera Ali, who is also the producer of the film.

For a year and a half, Meera kept working to get each and every detail of the Mughal era dressing right – from getting the fabric woven in Kotwara to hiring shoemakers to craft custom curl-tipped boots. And from the looks of it, it seems the efforts have paid off, for the actors look like they have just stepped out of history in their regal outfits. However, we can’t help but feel that is Imran trying to follow in Fawad’s footsteps by taking the nawabi route? Fawad’s modern-day portrayal of a prince won him many an accolade, let’s see if royalty works a charm for Imran too.

Even God can’t bring the ‘Khans’ together: Farah Khan

All three of the famous Khans rule Bollywood in their own way; despite their popularity being a common factor among them, they rarely see eye-to-eye. While Salman Khan and Aamir Khan have still managed to develop a respectful relationship over time, Shah Rukh Khan remains separate from the clan and it seems that may remain a case forever as Farah Khan, who maintains a cordial relationship with all three of them, told Hindustan Times.

“I think even God can’t bring them together so I am not even attempting that,” says Farah, laughing as she adds, “I tried to bring them together eight years back for the title track of Om Shanti Om but even that didn’t happen.” The title track from Farah’s SRK-starrer Om Shanti Om saw a host of Bollywood actors make a special appearance to shake a leg or two including Salman Khan. However, Aamir Khan was nowhere to be seen.

Despite the many controversies surrounding their relationship with each other, all hope is not lost for Farah who hopes to work with them together one day. “Let’s see, fingers crossed, if I’m able to cast Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir together, it’ll be fabulous. Chances are few but may be some day I might just get lucky, so never say no,” she added.
