Shamoon Ismail released two EPs in 2019 (Brown Sugar and Magic) and it looks like he’s looking to unload a lot more music this year.
Just a week after releasing ‘Rung’, Shamoon has dropped a second single from what looks like the same EP, given that the cover design for both singles is the same.
If ‘Rung’ – mastered by MRKLE at Stardek – had a playful musical vibe, even as it also offered an appealing layer of ambient, Shamoon’s latest is its opposite.
Also mastered by MRKLE, the song ‘Bad Girl’ is jointly produced by Shamoon Ismail and Rovalio and is slightly darker in its ambient tones and much less playful as a single.
Lyrically, it also finds Shamoon Ismail at a vulnerable point as he notes at one point (in his mix of English and Punjabi): “Meinu Chaida je koi I can trust/I feel your hands in my pocket/Tere kol mera wallet”.
The beats don’t do too much, which works well for this song but remains cyclical, almost mellow while Shamoon sings in unpretentious fashion, offering another layer, “Bandi Ain Kyun Mere Samne Toon Bad Girl?”.
It is an echo of a relationship that is as complicated as it is universal. At this speed, we won’t be surprised to hear another Shamoon Ismail track in the coming weeks.
