Islamabad: Apart from Mahira Khan, Riz Ahmed is also featured in the UNHCR video but right now, the actor has made some controversial headlines.
According to multiple reports online, Riz Ahmed, the British-Pakistani actor who also raps under the moniker Riz MC employed Rashid Pehlwan for the music video of his song ‘Mogambo’ and publicized it via him. However, according to reports, he made Pehlwan sign a “questionable contract” after the shoot. Riz MC has not responded to the controversial story so far.
Meanwhile the actor is all set to appear at London Film and Comic Con in 2020 with films like Star Wars: Rogue One and Venom (both fantasy fiction/superhero genre films) to his credit, which makes him a solid choice. The event is scheduled to take place over Olympia London from 24-26 July with Riz making his appearance on Saturday.
Named one of GQ’s most stylish men of 2019, Riz Ahmed has also called out Hollywood to reexamine Muslim imagery. At a conference, he noted, “The efforts of individual artists or storytellers may be bold, they may be progressive, they may act as beacons of hope for other people, but in the face of institutional prejudice and institutionalized obstacles, systemic obstacles, our efforts can sometime still fall flat.”
He further said, “(Hasan Minhaj) could win a Peabody, I could win an Emmy, Ibtihaj Muhammad could win the Olympics, but some of these obstacles are systemic, and we can’t really face them alone. We need your help. I’m basically here to ask for your help. Because it’s really scary to be a Muslim right now. Super scary.”
“With all my privilege and profile, I often wonder if this is going to be the year they round us up, if this is the year they’re going to put Trump’s Muslim registry into action, if this is going to be the year they ship us all off,” he continued, citing examples of Islamophobia, including Brexit-based nationalism in the U.K. and Uighur Muslims being held in detention camps in China.
Riz called for action, fearing for the lives of others like him and noted, “I think lives are quite literally at stake here. The representation of Muslims on screen — that feeds the policies that get enacted, the people that get killed, the countries that get invaded.”
