When a film crosses the billion dollar mark, it is almost confirmed that a sequel will be made. Negotiations are ongoing between director Todd Phillips and to direct Joker 2, the most infamous villain in the Batman story with Joaquin Phoenix again. Will Joaquin Phoenix be able to lose 50 pounds again and how dangerous would that be for him remains to be seen.
But, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips wanted to direct a series of original stories of certain characters. While that battle has been lost, he has come out of the meeting with one more story – in addition to Joker.
THR notes: “Phillips did emerge from the meeting with the rights to at least one other DC story, sources say. And now that Joker has crossed the $1 billion mark, a sequel is on the way. As the movie keeps raking in money overseas, Phillips is in talks to reprise his role as director for a second Joker outing.”
Though both Phoenix and Phillips had said this is a standalone movie, the minute the billion dollar mark was reached, the game, as they say, changed.
Furthermore, it has been reported that fans of Super-Man, who have so far been deprived of a Lex Luthor worthy of being Super-Man’s arch nemesis could be the one. Whether Phillips takes on Lex Luthor is another story but as far as Joker 2 is concerned, the film with Joaquin Phoenix essaying heckled comic who lives in Gotham City is coming. While Joker was his origin story, this one could be the one where he revels in being the villain of the story.
