As Joker hits theatres with Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role, the amount of admiration for the actor and the film seems to be at an all-time high with director Todd Philips potentially having made an Oscar-worthy superhero/super villain film. The actor also starred in the biblical Mary Magdalene and Her with Rooney Mara, who is his fiancée.
But the actors who shared the screen for the first time together in Her (2013) have an interesting history. In a recent cover interview to Vanity Fair, Phoenix admitted that he thought Mara didn’t like him at all or despised him. They presently share a live-in relationship.
But, as Mara admitted, she was just shy. “She’s the only girl I ever looked up on the internet,” Joaquin Phoenix told Vanity Fair in an extensive interview. “We were just friends, email friends. I’d never done that. Never looked up a girl online.”
As for Joker, it broke box office records apparently by grossing 95 million dollars upon opening, which is a first for the month of October.
Mara and Phoenix made their debut at Cannes in 2017 and have been together since then. He also made a heart-warming speech at TIFF earlier this year, saying: “One last thing — somewhere here, I don’t know where, is a filthy dragon, and I want to rip its wings off and fasten a blanket and sleep with it forever,” he said. “I love you. Thank you.”
