Presented by Salt Arts, the gig had Karachi grooving past midnight, with more music to follow. Instep tracks the story.

Sparlay Rawail from Khumariyaan and Hussain Dossa.

Celebrating the landmark of 75 shows, Karachi-based music live production company Salt Arts, and the season of monsoon, seem to have a symbiotic relationship. The two come together for some of the best concerts Karachi has played home to in recent years.

That said, after moving the venue to Arts Council with Hussain Dossa both opening and closing the show with Khumariyaan sandwiched in the middle, the crowd came out for the music.

And despite some complaints of it being very hot – the show was held indoors – the people danced to the tunes of Khumariyaan and the eclectic music of resident Salt Arts DJ Hussain Dossa.

Khumariyaan played some of its biggest hits including ‘Tamasha’ and the LSA award-winning ‘Ya Qurban’ while DJ Hussain Dossa proved he can hold a show on his own.

The season of music is far from over for Salt Arts. Karachi crowd is getting more music in the coming days, weeks and months ahead.

The multiple-act ‘SuperSalt 2018’ is getting a follow-up. Last year, the show featured Khumariyaan, Mekaal Hasan Band, SomeWhatSuper and Mughal-e-Funk. And as it turns out, it was not a one-off.

Salt Arts has announced a save-the-date for ‘SuperSalt 2019’. What acts will feature in this upcoming show remains to be seen but last year’s concert was the best in the year 2019 so watch out for 14th December. The venue will be Arts Council Open Air Amphitheatre, Karachi.

According to the curator’s note, “The energy of a bustling green room, is contagious. It keeps one wanting more. It represents community, camaraderie, common vision, love and all those good things that make us believe in what we do and translate it into artistic expression.”

Of the four acts, Khumariyaan and SomeWhatSuper have played shows in 2019, presented by Salt Arts. Who will make up the 2019 ‘SuperSalt’ version is therefore a mystery the company will reveal soon on its social media handles.

In addition, this season something called Salt Flights is being launched. According to a Salt Arts statement, it will be a “premium International collaborative platform for artists in Pakistan and the world.”

Salt Flights 001 is coming up on October 29, 2019, with artists details scheduled to be released soon. What a year of live music. All hail the memory makers.
