The first ever Lyari Literature Festival (LLF), which will be held in the premises of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University, Lyari (BBSUL), will kick off today (September 21). The two-day event will feature speakers and experts from various fields that will participate in 23 sessions along with some fabulous music performances, poetry sessions, theatre performances and book launches before it concludes on Sunday night (Sept 22).
With the aim to facilitate the process of peace promotion and social harmony through art and literature, Mehrdar Art and Production – a Karachi-based film production company that specialises in positive, socially- motivated content – has organised the two-day festival with the theme: ‘Safe, Peaceful Universities’.
“This festival in Lyari will provide an opportunity for the local writers, artists, and performers to have a platform at their home to represent their work,” stated LLF’s official Facebook handle.
Topics for panel discussions on the first day include Lyari and Politics, Education in Lyari, History of Lyari and Karachi, Women’s Participation in Art, Literature and Culture, among others. A qawwali session by the Hamza Brothers will also be held on the first day along with brilliant performances by singer and songwriter Arieb Azhar as well as Ustad Mumtaz Ali Sabzal.
The second day of LLF will feature storytelling workshops on Capacity Building and discussions on the role of art and social institutions to counter violent extremism and a mesmerizing performance by Lyari Underground.
Some of the panellists include Sabina Khatri, Dr Wahid Baloch, Dr Akhtar Baloch, Wusatullah Khan, Dr Manzoor Baloch, Gul Hasan Kalmati, Dr Kaleem Ullah Lashari, Dr Riaz Shaikh, Dr Saleem Memon, Dr Uzma Qadri, Seema Maheshwari, Dr Touseef Ahmed, Dr Irfan Aziz, Anjum Parvaiz and Naheed Israr, among many others.
