He says 2018 was a really good year for him but each year comes with a big bang and he expects 2019 to be bigger, personally as well as professionally. While Feroze Khan is careful to keep his personal life off the table, he doesn’t even try to hide his excitement for his upcoming drama serial, Dil Kya Karey, directed by Mehreen Jabbar, which promises to be a good start of the year for him. Judging by the teasers and the OST, the story – ‘of love, life and loss’ – appears to be a romance underlined with heart break.
As an actor, Feroze is on a roll. After delivering a memorable performance as the ominous, egoistic Mir Hadi in hit drama serial Khaani, Feroze flipped 180 degrees and bared his funny bones as Romeo in the ongoing Romeo Weds Heer. Somewhere in between, he was Dino in Dino Ki Dulhaniya, another rom-com. All three projects were produced by 7th Sky Entertainment (as is DKK) and cast Sana Javed as his leading lady. While Khaani and Romeo Weds Heer are directed by Anjum Shahzad, Dino Ki Dulhaniya was made under Mehreen Jabbar’s direction and Feroze is all too happy working with the acclaimed director again.
He spoke about working on the upcoming Dil Kya Karey as we sat down over a cup of tea.
“Working with Mehreen was amazing,” he began. “Mehreen Jabbar is a different kind of director; she is well-educated, well-spoken and well-read. She used to guide me and tell me what movies to watch while we were filming. Working with her was insane but I enjoyed it.”
One of the biggest challenges for Feroze was to wake up and make it to an 8 a.m shoot everyday.
“Mehreen’s day starts at 8 a.m and while I’m not at all an early riser, I stick by my commitments. I told her I was going to manage it (waking up early) and I arrived late only three days and that too by just 30 minutes.”
So, what was Dil Kya Karey all about?
“Dil Kya Karay is a romantic play with its share of tragedies,” is all he offered.
How was the experience of shooting it?
“I worked with Shamim Hilaly, Sonya Rehman, Tanveer Jamal, Abid Ali saab, Mariyam Nafees and Yumna Zaidi on this project,” he shared. “All of them are exceptionally talented and I learnt a lot from them. Their experience, hold and take on the camera is very different so for me just sitting in front of them was good learning. Sarmad Khoosat is also part of the play but we met just once on set.”
How different was his character in DKK from characters he had previously portrayed?
“My character – Armaan – is completely different to my earlier portrayals on-screen,” he said. “Armaan is a selfless guy. He wants to do good to everyone and wants to make everyone happy. I always take things back from my character,” Feroze furthered. “Mir Hadi in Khaani strengthened my faith. I like Armaan’s selfless approach towards life.”
Was there ever a personal reflection of Feroze’s real life in the characters he portrayed on screen?
“I could relate to Mir Hadi as well as Armaan,” he admitted. “For me acting happens between the lines; it is not just delivering dialogues. It is when you can make the other person feel what you are feeling through relatable expressions and emotions. And yes…I think I can be as selfless as Armaan.”
How was the experience of working with Yumna Zaidi?
“Yumna Zaidi is a brilliant actor and a thorough professional who brings a lot to the table,” he said, in genuine admiration. “That said, Sana is a great friend and I didn’t mind the fandom going on for us as an onscreen couple. People did like us together.”
Feroze Khan is working on back to back drama serials; when will we see him on the silver screen?
“You will probably hear about a film in 2019,” he replied. “If I’m not signing with someone else then I will do it myself.”
