One of Geo TV’s most watched drama serials, Mera Khuda Janay that stars Hira Mani, Ali Abbas, Anum Fayyaz and Alyy Khan in key roles, recently came to an end. Though the drama was regressive in more ways than one, the end was somewhat convincing as liberating ideas take root.
Waleed (Ali Abbas) is happily married to Roohi (Hira Mani) but unforeseen circumstances and Waleed’s mother force him to marry for a second time with Iqra (Anum Fayyaz), who is his cousin. This naturally weakens Waleed and Roohi’s bond and their marriage begins to disintegrate. Iqra’s brother Shafiq, meanwhile, sexually assaults Roohi, who gives birth to a daughter. After few years, Waleed learns that he is impotent and finds out that she is not his child. He questions Roohi’s loyalty and sidelines her.
Upon learning the truth in the last episode, that aired earlier this week, Waleed regrets mistreating Roohi but she goes on to sought divorce from him. His second wife, Iqra, also leaves him when she learns that he is impotent. Waleed eventually kills his wife’s offender, who had been manipulating him to hide his sinful act and then commits suicide.
The good thing about the ending was that the women in his life left him instead of forgiving him for demeaning and hurting them with his ego. He deserved to be left alone but suicide is a mental health issue and therefore drama serials must be careful to not use it as a regular trope to move the story along.
