Socially relevant themes have become a norm on television, with most TV plays highlighting one social issue or the other. Though it is a good development, too many stories and serials now revolve around child abuse or rape, on one hand desensitizing the issue and second, consistently depressing the viewers. An upcoming socially relevant play, called Surkh Chandi, is taking social commentary a step further and aims to explore a different issue that is equally prevalent and deserves our attention. It follows the story of an acid attack survivor.
Directed by Shahid Shafaat and produced by Sana Shahnawaz and Samina Humayun Saeed, Surkh Chandni features Osman Khalid Butt and Sohai Ali Abro in lead roles while the script has been written by Asma Nabeel of Khaani and Baandi fame.
Asma recently took to social media and shared how important this project is. She posted, “This project will surely move the audience. I have put my heart and soul in the story. While writing a lot of scenes I was crying and after watching some footage I cried once again.”
Co-producer of the upcoming project, Sana Shahnawaz noted in a recent interview, “Acid attacks or rather the troubles of acid attack victims haven’t been highlighted enough which we thought was much needed. They aren’t just limited to Pakistan; this is pretty much a global issue.”
Aside from Osman and Sohai, Surkh Chandni features Hasan Ahmed, Asad Siddiqui, Huma Nawab and Mansha Pasha in key roles.
