In an exclusive interview with Instep, the actress speaks about playing daring characters on television and how she selects roles and projects.

Having spent a considerable amount of time in the film industry, veteran actress Resham has numerous films under her belt such as Ghunghat, Sangam, Dupatta Jal Raha Hai, Inteha and others. She later ventured into television and gave remarkable performances in drama serials that include Man-o-Salwa, Aashti, Mohabbat Jaye Bhar Mein and supernatural thriller Naagin.

Gearing up for her upcoming Geo drama serial Noor Bibi – the teasers for which came out recently and look quite interesting – the versatile actress is set to take on yet another complicated character.

“In this play I am essaying a complex yet strong character called Noor Bibi, who is a Pirni (spiritual guide). I think after watching me as Noor Bibi, people might end up hating me,” Resham begins in this exclusive conversation with Instep. The drama serial also features Sanam Chauhdry, Ali Abbas and Usman Peerzada and the story actually revolves around people’s beliefs and their blind trust on pirs, faqeers and so on.

“Even if these so-called spiritual leaders mislead their followers, people have so much faith in these pirs that they blindly follow them without understanding that all this may lead to dire consequences,” she adds.

Resham says that portraying the character of Noor Bibi was certainly a challenge for her. “In my last drama serial Naagin, I played the role of Sajna, a snake charmer, which was a negative character but quite glamorous with heavy makeup and bling-y clothes. But in this play you will see me wearing an abaya and a scarf. The weather was quite hot when we were shooting the drama but I think all the effort will be worthwhile once the drama goes on air.”

The actress reiterates that both the characters are totally different from each other and a lot of energy and effort is required to pull off a negative character – be it Sajna or Noor Bibi.As far as her selection of roles is concerned, Resham admits that she has done all sorts of characters in the initial stages of her career but now she looks for depth whenever she is offered any role.

“I always opt for different, challenging roles and try to give my best. I believe it is an actor’s job to own the character, to make it believable and relatable to the viewers. I want people to only see the character that I am portraying and forget that this is the actress Resham, so I am quite picky that way,” she asserts.

As for her upcoming film, Kaaf Kangana, which has been written and directed by Khalil-ur-Rehman, Resham tells Instep, “Khalil sahab recently approached me for his film and offered me a very important yet beautiful role. At this point I can’t reveal much about my part in the film, but all I can say is that the movie is an intense romance drama and that the shooting will commence from November 21 in Bahawalpur.”

Speaking of her future TV projects, Resham admits that though there is another drama serial in the pipe titled Iqraar, helmed by by Kanwal Khoosat, it is stuck. “The shooting has been complete for the last seven to eight months but it hasn’t been aired due to one reason or the other. Apart from Iqraar, there is another play called Mutthi Bhar Chahat, alongside Aagha Ali, which has been written by Sooraj Baba and directed by Zaib Chaudary,” she reveals.

According to Resham, the shooting is currently underway and you will get to see beautiful locations. “After a very long time, I am playing a very sweet and calm girl, who happens to be lawyer and Aagha Ali’s love interest in the play.” Beyond these two productions, Resham says on a parting note, “There are a few TV projects that are in the pipeline but it will take some time to materialize.”
