This Ayushmann Khurrana film strikes the perfect balance between tackling an important social message while being hilarious at the same time.

Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer Badhaai Ho, that explores a unique subject, released worldwide last week (October 29) and is generating great reviews from audiences and critics since then. The film is a family drama that delivers several social messages using humor as its medium of narrative. It’s a fun watch with a soul.

Badhaai Ho follows the story of a middle class household and how they deal with an extremely unexpected situation that life confronts them with. A middle-age, romantic couple – parents to two grown-up sons – ‘embarrasses’ its family with the unexpected news of expecting their third child, after almost 25 years of marriage. The woman refuses to get the child aborted and opens doors to all sorts of criticism. Their sons, particularly the elder one Nakul, essayed by Ayushmann, as well as the grandmother get upset with the news, not realizing that the couple isn’t really at fault. While this becomes a testing time for the family, it also brings them closer eventually. How does that happen, one has to watch the film to find out.

Though the subject in question appears to be funny at first and does make room for some hilarious situations in the film, it answers so many questions that usually remain unanswered. We as a society are quick to judge and come to unwarranted conclusions. Any married couple, no matter what age, has the right to romance. Romance between older couples should not be seen as a taboo. This is what the film digs deep into.

The couple, played by veterans Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao, is very convincing and are certainly a treat to watch. Ayushmann as Nakul impresses yet again while Sanya Malhotra as his girlfriend in the film is promising. She has a small but strong screen presence. The bittersweet grandmother, played by ace actor Surekha Sikri, catches one’s attention whenever she appears on the screen and leaves a strong mark with her dialogue delivery.

Badhaai Ho, directed by Amit Sharma, is a must-watch. The film has raked in over 65 crore at the Indian box office while it is doing well in cinemas across Pakistan as well.
