Indian crime series, Sacred Games, based on Vikram Chandra’s best-selling novel of the same name, premiered earlier this year on Netflix. And the good news is that Netflix has announced a second season of their critically acclaimed series. The Hindi- and English-language show was one of Netflix’s first original series made in India.

The news was confirmed via a video on Netflix India’s Twitter account. A cryptic video was posted along with the caption: “The worst is yet to come. Sacred Games will be back for Season 2.” And it seems like the games are about to get deadlier with a new trail of betrayal, crime, passion, and a thrilling chase through Mumbai’s underbelly.

The first season of this dark thriller series (eight episodes), featuring Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte among others, not only became popular with audiences but also got rave reviews from critics worldwide for its gritty plot and power-packed performances.

“We’ve been thrilled by the response to Sacred Games from fans worldwide, and especially in India, to this high-quality production,” said Erik Barmack, VP, International Originals at Netflix. “It’s incredibly exciting for us to take the story of Sacred Games forward and open a new chapter in the series with its second season,” he added.

“The Mumbai-set show explores the city’s web of organized crime, corruption, politics and espionage that lie beneath India’s economic renaissance, and pits a jaded cop against India’s most wanted gangster and is based on Vikram Chandra’s best-selling novel. Production is by Netflix and Phantom Films, a directors’ collective formed by Vikas Bahl, Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane and Madhu Mantena in 2011,” noted Variety.

Coming back to season 2 of Sacred Games, “The second season picks up from Sartaj Singh (essayed by Saif Ali Khan) pursuing his relentless battle of saving the city and Ganesh Gaitonde (essayed by Nawazuddin Siddiqui) facing bigger challenges to retain his position as the legendary kingpin of Mumbai. The intriguing Guruji (Pankaj Tripathi), introduced in season one as Gaitonde’s third father, plays a pivotal role in unfolding a chain of events that shape the next season,” revealed Netflix.

While the second season is scheduled to film in India and other locations this fall, Vikramaditya Motwane and Varun Grover will continue their respective Sacred Games roles as show-runner and lead writer respectively, and Anurag Kashyap will continue directing Ganesh Gaitonde’s track. However, reports suggest that Neeraj Ghaywan (of Masaan fame) will take over Sartaj Singh’s plot.

The upcoming season will see a mix of old favorites and fresh new characters that will certainly drive the storyline to its intrepid twists and turns.
