History made at creative Emmys

Multiple drones encircle the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles for the first time as the Emmys takes place.

By the time you read this story, the winners of the annual 70th Primetime Emmys would have been disclosed. But a week before the actual ceremony, the pre-parties have begun and more to the point, history was made at the creative Emmys.

HBO’s Game of Thrones picked up seven trophies in technical categories such as fantasy/sci-fi costumes and sound mixing for a comedy or drama series (one hour).

FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story also won four awards.

However, even bigger than these victories was the fact that for the first time, four African-American actors won in the category of guest actors.

Noted Variety: “Tiffany Haddish won best guest actress in a comedy for hosting Saturday Night Live. Ron Cephas Jones won best guest actor in a drama for This Is Us. Samira Wiley won best guest actress in a drama for The Handmaid’s Tale and Katt Williams won best guest actor in a comedy for Atlanta.”

As for the creative Emmys, other winners included shows like Atlanta, The Crown, Westworld and Stranger Thing, among others.

And yes, while stars picked up their trophy at the Emmys inside the Microsoft Theater, outside there were reportedly lots of drones. Big Brother was watching, very closely, it seems.

“New technology offers new opportunities and we plan to utilize drones in a greater capacity this year than ever before for Monday’s ceremony,” a prominent law enforcement source is quoted telling Deadline about the procedures put in place for the Emmys in Los Angeles. “As security concerns evolve, multiple eyes in the sky enhance our established protocols to allow the creation and maintenance of a tighter perimeter around the venue, performers and guests,” said the source further to Deadline.

When it comes to the Emmys, a lot of awards are too close to call, such as Outstanding Lead Actress in Drama, where the battle is between Sandra Oh for her performance in Killing Eve and Elisabeth Moss for her role in The Handmaid’s Tale. Outstanding Limited Series has several worthy contenders but most predict a victory for Patrick Melrose, particularly since, for some odd reason, The Looming Tower did not even get a nomination.

Similarly, in Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, predictions have suggested that Sterling K. Brown for his performance in This Is Us will come ahead of fellow nominees such as Jason Bateman (Ozark), Ed Harris (Westworld), Matthew Rhys (The Americans), Milo Ventimiglia (This Is Us) and Jeffrey Wright (Westworld). As for The Americans, in its last season, critics agree it should win but also suggest that The Handmaid’s Tale has a better shot. Game of Thrones is another Academy favourite so this one is also too close to call.
