The actor and designer spent a day at the Afghan refugee camp, earlier this week, as part of UNHCR’s initiative that guards the rights of refugees residing in Karachi.
Angelina Jolie, Priyanka Chopra, Katy Perry and Gigi Hadid, among others, are some artists associated with various United Nations (UN) projects. Now Mahira Khan has joined that list. The superstar-actor visited the Afghan refugee camp in Karachi on Wednesday as part of the initiative led by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Pakistan (UNHCR).
Huma Adnan, owner of FnkAsia, also visited the refugee camp along with Mahira Khan, with the former having joined hands with UNHCR Pakistan earlier this year to provide training to refugees who are living in Karachi and promote artisans through their craft.
The Humsafar star took to social media and shared a series of pictures along with a video where she sang the famous patriotic (Vital Signs) song ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ with the children.
Writing about the initiative, which guards the rights of Afghan refugees and helps in relocating them to Afghanistan, Mahira took to her official Instagram handle and spoke about her experience and more. “I’m proud to say that my country is one of the most generous countries in the world. The Government and people of Pakistan – with the support of the international community – have been generously hosting Afghan refugees for nearly forty years.”
She further went on to say that since 2002, around 4.3 million Afghan refugees have returned back to Afghanistan under the largest voluntary return programme in the world. “The UN refugee agency has been closely working with the Government of Pakistan and other partners to ensure that the rights of refugees are fully protected. Pakistan continues to host 1.39 million Afghan refugees,” she added.Mahira also stressed on how important it is to care for these refugees as more than half of them are kids, many of whom came without their mothers or fathers. “They are our future, every child in the world is. No one chooses to be a refugee. No one chooses to leave their home,” noted Mahira.
Besides Mahira, fashion designer Huma Adnan shared her experience on Twitter and said, “Visiting homes of refugees - that I have been working with for months now - was an overwhelming but not an unfamiliar experience. Every step carried a weight of my responsibility to further facilitate and increased the ache to do something for their beautiful souls.”
Both Mahira Khan and Huma Adnan also appreciated UNHCR Pakistan for their efforts towards rehabilitation and sustainability of the refugees who are residing in Karachi.
