It’s been a tumultuous week for Pakistani cinema after a trio of Eid-ul-Azha releases, and the local box office collections are now speaking volumes about it.
Witnessing a huge clash at the box office, Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2, Load Wedding, and Parwaaz Hai Junoon saw throngs of crowds making their way to the cinema to support local films. However, were all films successful? Now, that’s a whole different story.
According to independent box office websites and sources, all seems to be haphazard this time around, given the controversy around screen allocations and its subsequent effect on collections.
If sources are to be believed, the numbers show a stark contrast in how the films fared during the last week. For example, while the Humayun Saeed-starrer JPNA 2 claims to have made PKR 17 crore in less than a week’s time, Fahad Mustafa’s Load Wedding has only managed to collect an approximate of PKR 7 crore in the same time. However, the latter has faced the brunt of absurd screen times at multiplexes around Pakistan, which have caused the disparity amongst numbers.
Meanwhile, Hamza Ali Abbasi-starrer Parwaaz Hai Junoon has managed to grab the public’s affection despite average to bad critic reviews and in turn, collected PKR 14.2 crore during the same time.
Despite such numbers, all three films also have direct competition from Ali Zafar’s reigning blockbuster Teefa In Trouble, which in spite of being in its sixth week, has managed to garner PKR 90 lac this week, taking its overall collection to PKR 31 crore in approximately 40 days.
What will the coming week bring for the four Pakistani films currently competing with each other sans threat from a major Bollywood film? Time will tell…
