After ‘Ab Sirf Imran Khan’ – that served as the campaign anthem for Imran Khan – and singing ‘Suno Chanda’ for the drama serial of the same name, in which he also acted, Farhan Saeed is back with a new track, ‘Maula’.

The video for ‘Maula’, directed by Adnan Qazi, opens with Farhan lying on the floor, a dog barking, cop cars in the background, a man disappearing in the background before the frame cuts to the singer’s usual self.

Amidst fancy cars, lush and foreign landscape, we find Farhan, joined by Kiran Malik, as his love interest basically asking ‘Maula’ (God) singing tedious lyrics about love between boy and girl. Moments of romance, a scene in a club, dressed in glamorous garb and more shots of a couple in love, as if it wasn’t obvious enough. There is nothing too original about this entire theme, the song or the lyrical material even as it has picked up millions of views on YouTube.

After a while, this happy couple is encountered by a gang of sorts, featuring five Caucasian men plus their leader, a long-haired man, actor Richard Myers. One of them holds on to the girl and Farhan is beaten, it feels unclear.

You have to see this video to understand what a bizarre editing sham of a video it really is. It ends with Farhan somehow emerging alive and well, embracing his love, once again with cop cars in the background.

Speaking about the video, Farhan stated, “This is the first time I have worked with Adnan Qazi and he has done a brilliant job, I really like how he perceived ‘Maula’ and delivered the same visuals that I had in my mind. A lot of hard work and sweat has been put by Adnan Qazi and his team.”

Shot in London, it is unclear what the message of this video is or if there is any at all. What it is trying to say, maybe as a statement on racism, hatred, or ‘the love conquers all’ idea, it’s doesn’t come out right.

The one victory of this song is how Farhan Saeed’s music is rescued somewhat by Rishi Rich, who produced it and has added layers of beats to elevate his overall sound.
