Having made her acting debut with Teri Meri Kahani earlier this year, award-winning model turned actor Saheefa Jabbar Khattak is gearing up for her next TV project, titled Beti. The upcoming play features her as Maryam, an educated young woman raised by a strong mother; her father passes away while she was very young.
We spoke to Saheefa to find out about her character in Beti and whether its progressive in any way. She informed that her character Maryam is married into a very old-school family that is even against giving birth to a girl child. The story revolves around the theme of women empowerment and carries a strong message as Maryam, after giving birth to a baby girl, fights for her and her daughter’s rights against all odds.
“It’s Maryam’s story, her struggle and how she fights for her rights, how she fights for her daughter and how she tries to make her in-laws understand that daughters are a blessing and not a curse,” Saheefa added.
She is cast opposite actor-surgeon Fahad Mirza, who essays the role of her husband and shooting for the play has begun.
Aside from Saheefa and Fahad, Beti also features Jawed Sheikh, who will return to television after a few years. Written by Sophia Khurram and directed by Mohsin Mirza, Beti will go on air later this year. We hope the play offers a change of pace and breaks away from the usual saas-bahu sagas while handling this subject with sensitivity. – Buraq Shabbir
