The year is 2018 and sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior seems to be the one topic that won’t die down, here in Pakistan or beyond.
The internet in Pakistan for once is ablaze for the right reasons. One girl from Bahria College Islamabad has come forward with her story, describing on a social media post what she endured at the hands of an examiner during a practical exam. It has also been revealed that a total of 80 students have endured the same, in varying degrees and at least 18 testimonies have been shared on social media.
As action against the man in question is taken or not remains to be seen, in the aftermath of the heartbreaking revelations by the students, the immediate result is that this story has gone viral and has pulled in support of celebrities who are, like the students and activists, asking for justice.
Meesha Shafi, who alleged sexual harassment at the hands of singer/actor Ali Zafar, and has since been trolled to a shocking level even for Pakistani Internet users, was among the first to lend support to these students.
“All strength and power to this brave sister for sharing her disgusting and alarming experience. Bahria College, kindly take immediate action. We are all watching and we are all waiting! #TimesUp” wrote Meesha on Twitter.
Others to lend support to the cause include Mawra Hocane, Osman Khalid Butt and Mahira Khan, who wrote, “Name and shame this man!! Shame on #SadatBashir!! Make an example out of him. May justice be served to all these brave girls and God knows how many before them.”
