The 45th annual Daytime Emmy Awards were held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, California, on Sunday and were hosted by Mario Lopez (Extra) and Sheryl Underwood (The Talk).
Days of Our Lives emerged as the top winner of the evening, bagging five trophies. While the ladies of The Real won for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Hosts, the talk show front had a couple of surprises and The Talk won for Outstanding Talk Show/Entertainment instead of Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Other winners for the evening included Dr. Oz winning for Outstanding Talk Show/Informative for a second year in a row.During the ceremony, Deidre Hall honored Days of Our Lives veterans– and real-life husband and wife – Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth Hayes with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Lopez, who co-hosted the ceremony with Underwood said that it was “not a show about politics.” Even so, there was the occasional mention of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements and even Gloria Allred mentioned Bill Cosby’s guilty verdict when she came out on stage to present Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program to Judge Mathis. Besides that, the ceremony was lighter on the social and political front as it stuck to celebrating daytime television. Joely Fisher sang an In Memoriam tribute to the talent that we lost in the past year including Della Reese, Monty Hall, Rose Marie, Jim Nabors, among others.
This is not all! The awards show also celebrated its 45th anniversary with several packages looking back at ceremonies and honorees past with vintage clips. Mario Lopez and Sheryl Underwood kicked off the night by bringing out Peter Marshall, the original Hollywood Squares host, who also emceed the first-ever Daytime Emmys in 1974. Other segments celebrated 35 years of Wheel of Fortune, 55 years of General Hospital and the 50th anniversary of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.
