The youngest Nobel-Laureate and an advocate of girls’ education, 20-year-old Malala has been recently honoured with a mural painted in India for her work against inequality.
The activist, who was shot at for defying the ban on girls going to school, is also the UN Messenger of Peace. To support the cause, she founded the Malala Fund in 2013, an advocacy organization to ensure girls’ education worldwide, while one of its initiatives Gulmakai Network supports the work of education champions across the world.
Malala was in Davos recently to participate in the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting. She spoke against inequality and education and met a number of global leaders and CEOs to seek their support for girls’ education. “It’s not one person’s job to do this. I can’t send all girls to school, it would be nearly impossible but what I can do is send as many as possible, what is in my potential, I will do that,” Malala stated while speaking at the WEF.
It was after her appearance at Davos that Malala was honoured in Punjab, India, where her mural has been painted amongst some of the icons of the country including Lata Mangeshkar, Amrita Pritam, athlete P. T. Usha, and boxer Mary Kom, amongst others in the city of Barnala.
The interesting part is that Malala is the only non-Indian figure to be selected as part of a campaign to honour the strongest women of India and the Subcontinent. A proud moment indeed.
