Taylor Swift is considered music royalty in the United States of America. But if there’s one man who isn’t convinced, it’s Quincy Jones. The iconic producer, who is associated with music’s most illustrious names such as Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Prince and Tupac, in a recent interview with GQ Men, called Taylor out.
When asked whether he likes any of the artists who are presently big, Quincy told the publication: “Yeah, I love Kendrick Lamar, I love Bruno Mars, I love Drake, I love Ludacris, I love Common. Mary J. Blige. Jennifer Hudson.”
But when asked about Taylor Swift and how she is the biggest pop star in terms of sales, Jones, as told by GQ, made a face “somewhere between disapproval and disdain” before stating what’s wrong with Swift’s music: “We need more songs, man. F***ing songs, not hooks.”
When pressed further, Jones explained, “Knowing what you’re doing. You know what I mean? Since I was a little kid, I’ve always heard the people that don’t wanna do the work. It takes work, man. The only place you find success before work is the dictionary, and that’s alphabetical.”
When asked what he would do if he were producing Swift, the producer who has at least one Emmy, an Oscar, a Tony and a Grammy, noted, “I’ll figure something out. Man, the song is the shit—that’s what people don’t realize. A great song can make the worst singer in the world a star. A bad song can’t be saved by the three best singers in the world. I learned that 50 years ago.”
