Ever since her Bollywood debut with Hindi Medium opposite Irrfan Khan, Saba Qamar has been making headlines and attracting great reviews for her performance; the appreciation has risen from both sides of the border. Though she didn’t win the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (female) that she was nominated for, the film won two of the five top awards it was nominated for: Best Film and Irrfan Khan for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Male).

Speaking about the film’s recognition at the recently held ceremony, Saba shared that she was confident that the film would make it big when she was signing on for it.

“Yes, I knew it,” she asserted in a conversation with Instep. “Content is king. I knew there was substance in the film and it was relatable for every family.”

Reflecting on her decision to sign on for the film, Saba said: “The first reason why I agreed to do the film was the script. I had loved it. And the second attraction for me was Irrfan Khan. Otherwise, why would I play the role of a mother at this point? I believe actors shouldn’t think of these things; it was a character which I opted for and it worked for me. I am super excited and happy.”

Hindi Medium, which highlights society’s obsession with English language and the way it perceives those who can’t speak the language, received a total of five nominations at the Filmfare Awards including Best Film, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Male), Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female), Best Director and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Male). It was also announced at the event that the film has been chosen by the Indian Embassy to be screened at the annual Festival of Indian films in Armenia.

Coming back to Saba, she is the first Pakistani actress to bag a Best Actor nomination at the Filmfare awards. Fawad Khan was the first Pakistani actor to actually win Best Debut for Khoobsurat at the Filmfare Awards in 2015.
