After landing into multiple controversies, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming period film, now called Padmavat, finally gets a release date. Originally titled Padmavati, the film was supposed to release on December 1 last year but is now scheduled to hit screens on January 25, 2018.
According to latest reports, despite demands of a ban on the film, the censor board has finally cleared it with (reportedly 200) cuts, including a change in the title. “It will release as Padmavat on January 25; the film has got U/A certificate,” sources told IANS.
This is not all. Amid reports that the movie has a release date, chief minister Vasundhara Raje of Rajasthan has claimed that Padmavat will not be released in Rajasthan. Raje said in a statement that respecting the sentiments of the people of the state, the movie will not be screened in any cinema hall in Rajasthan.
Starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in key roles, the film has been in hot waters for one reason or the other ever since it was announced. Following the story of Rani Padmavati, it was accused by Karni Sena for distorting history related to the Rajput community and portraying the character of Rani Padmini in poor light.
Coming back to its release, if Padmavat comes out on the said date (January 25), it will see a box office clash with Akshay Kumar’s social commentary PadMan while Sidharth Malhotra’s Aiyaari, which was also slated to release on the same day, has been pushed to February 9 to avoid the clash.
