After setting the television world on fire with his exploration of the O.J. Simpson story that led to multiple awards and a global audience, Ryan Murphy is back with another true crime anthology series.

The second season, American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, set to debut on January 17, is about the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace that took place in front of his Miami Beach mansion in 1997.

While the trailer is a thrill to watch, here’s what we know about the series.

For one thing, like ACS: O.J. Simpson story, this one too draws its source material from a book. Maureen Orth’s book about the murder, Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History is the source material for the series.

The limited series will follow “the events leading up to the 50-year-old’s death through the eyes of the designer (played by Edgar Ramirez); his sister, Donatella Versace (Penelope Cruz); his partner, Antonio D’Amico (Ricky Martin); and the 27-year-old serial killer who shot him, Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss),” noted The Hollywood Reporter.

It will also explore the prevalent homophobia of the time and how it allowed Cunanan to commit homicides.

“We’re trying to talk about a crime within a social idea,” Murphy said on the matter. “Versace, who was [Andrew Cunanan’s] last victim, did not have to die. One of the reasons [Cunanan] was able to make his way across the country and pick off these victims, many of whom were gay, was because of homophobia at the time.”

Set to debut on January 17, 2018, American Crime Story 2 is the first TV show in which Penelope Cruz is starring as a regular. Watch out, this one will be special.
