Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s big budget period drama, Padmavati has been drawing in criticism for the last one year, resulting in several protests, threats and even ban on the film’s release. Initially scheduled to release on December 1, this year, the date has been pushed in the light of controversies. However, things seem to have gotten even worse with time. A man was found hanging yesterday morning at Jaipur’s famous Nahargarh fort and a stone wall nearby was scribbled with, “Padmavati’ ka virodh” (in opposition to Padmavati). The graffiti also includes this warning: “We don‘t burn effigies, we hang them.”

The dead man has been identified as Chetan Saini, a local jeweler while the police isn’t sure if this is a case of murder or suicide. Lokendra singh Kalvi of the Karni Sena, who earlier led violent demonstrations against the film, described this morning’s death as “regrettable” and said “it should not have happened”.

With Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor playing pivotal roles in the film, the period drama has been accused of distorting history. However, the director, Bhansali has clearly denied all such allegations saying that he has taken care people’s sentiments in this regard.
